Visual Theology – Ephesians

The Visual Theology charts are designed to help you see the structure and movement of Scripture. They highlight patterns, contrasts, and developments that are often difficult to hold together when reading line by line.

These charts show the structure of the argument. The accompanying articles develop each part in full.

This approach follows a long tradition of visual teaching in the Church. The well-known charts of Clarence Larkin helped many grasp the broad outline of Scripture. In the same spirit, these charts aim to make visible what the Word of God is revealing.

Positional Truth vs. Human Condition

Ephesians 2:19-22 -- Fellow Citizens and Household of God

This chart shows the structure. What follows explains each part.

Ephesians 2:19-22
Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God; And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

Our Position in Christ: Fellow Citizens with the Saints

Ephesians 2:19-22 declares that all who believe the gospel are "fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God." This is a positional truth established by God for every believer, based not on our spiritual attainment but on what God has accomplished in Christ. Jesus Christ Himself is the chief cornerstone (Ephesians 2:20).

The Bible fully acknowledges the human condition—we are weak and prone to failure. Yet justification has qualified every believer for a share in the saints' inheritance (Colossians 1:12). If you have believed the gospel—that Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again (1 Corinthians 15:3-4)—you are both justified and qualified. Our position in Christ is sure.

Positional truth means what is declared true of every believer in Ephesians 1-2 stands regardless of our fluctuating condition. We do not look to our performance, feelings, or failures to determine God's work. We believe the Word. The message of Christ, not personal attainment, is the basis for unity: there is "one body, and one Spirit... one Lord, one faith, one baptism" (Ephesians 4:4-5). All believers share the same standing because of Christ.

We are sinners—sometimes immature, failing, or divisive. Yet the gospel tells us our position, and our condition only confirms we need grace. Saints are not more righteous; they have believed God's testimony. "Whoever believes God's testimony concerning his Son has that testimony in himself" (1 John 5:9-10). This is the seal of the Spirit (Ephesians 1:13-14). The presence of the message is evidence God is doing what He said.

It is error to seek the "real church" by looking for the most spiritual people. This denies God's work and forgets our flesh. We recognize a fellow member of God's household not by performance, but by whether they have believed the gospel. If they have, all God has for the saints is theirs, and we must treat them as fellow citizens.

Even when discipline is necessary (1 Corinthians 5:5), it is for restoration, not exclusion from the household. The foundation remains Christ. Our position is unchanging, even while our condition fluctuates.

We must not let anyone convince us we are not fellow citizens because of our present state. "We are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints" (Ephesians 2:19). This is true of all believers. Our standing rests on Christ's accomplishment, not our experience. This positional truth is the basis for our confidence, unity, and hope.
