Visual Theology – Ephesians

The Visual Theology charts are designed to help you see the structure and movement of Scripture. They highlight patterns, contrasts, and developments that are often difficult to hold together when reading line by line.

These charts show the structure of the argument. The accompanying articles develop each part in full.

This approach follows a long tradition of visual teaching in the Church. The well-known charts of Clarence Larkin helped many grasp the broad outline of Scripture. In the same spirit, these charts aim to make visible what the Word of God is revealing.

Foundation of the Church

Ephesians 2:19-22 -- The Church's True Foundation

This chart shows the structure. What follows explains each part.

Ephesians 2:19-22
Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God; And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

The Church's Foundation: A Present Reality

Ephesians 2:19-22 reveals the church as a present reality, grounded in God’s accomplishment in Christ. Its foundation is not human performance but the testimony concerning Christ—what He has done, as revealed by the apostles and prophets, with Jesus Christ Himself as the chief cornerstone (Ephesians 2:20-22).

The Prophetic and Apostolic Testimony

This foundation is already laid. The prophets, inspired by the Spirit of Christ, testified beforehand of His sufferings and glory (1 Peter 1:11). Their message pointed forward to Christ, the same testimony Paul summarizes: “that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). The apostles were eyewitnesses of Christ’s death and resurrection, entrusted with the mystery of the church (2 Peter 1:16, 19). The foundation is the convergence of prophetic testimony and apostolic witness, anchored in Christ as the chief cornerstone.

The Mark of the Church: The Message

What marks the church is the message it proclaims. Its unity and identity are established by the gospel: the testimony that Christ died for our sins and rose again, and that salvation is a free gift by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8-9). The presence of this message evidences God building His habitation; those who believe it are fellow citizens with the saints and members of God’s household (Ephesians 2:19).

The Security of Positional Truth

This is positional truth. Every believer who trusts God’s testimony concerning His Son—regardless of condition or maturity—is already built on this foundation. Our position in Christ is secure because it rests on God’s work, not our efforts. We are not to seek a spiritual elite but recognize all believers who hold the testimony as members of the household.

Recognizing Fellow Citizens

We recognize fellow members by the testimony they hold. If they confess that Christ died for their sins, rose from the dead, and that salvation is by grace through faith, they are built on the same foundation. Even in discipline, the testimony is the dividing line. Those who deny or corrupt the message are not building on the foundation, but those who hold it, however weak, are fellow citizens.

Thus, the church’s true foundation is the testimony of Christ revealed by the apostles and prophets, with Jesus Christ as the chief cornerstone. This is the basis for the church’s unity and identity—a reality for all who have the testimony (Ephesians 2:22).
