Visual Theology – Ephesians

The Visual Theology charts are designed to help you see the structure and movement of Scripture. They highlight patterns, contrasts, and developments that are often difficult to hold together when reading line by line.

These charts show the structure of the argument. The accompanying articles develop each part in full.

This approach follows a long tradition of visual teaching in the Church. The well-known charts of Clarence Larkin helped many grasp the broad outline of Scripture. In the same spirit, these charts aim to make visible what the Word of God is revealing.

Armor of God: Individual vs. Corporate

Ephesians 6:10-20 -- The Armor of God and the Corporate Warrior

This chart shows the structure. What follows explains each part.

Ephesians 6:10-20
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; and for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

The Armor of God: A Corporate Reality

The Armor of God in Ephesians 6:10-20 is often seen as individual virtues to be achieved. However, Paul’s epistle reveals it as the shared inheritance of the corporate New Man—the Body of Christ—standing together in Christ’s victory. The foundation is laid throughout Ephesians, where the building and stature of the Body are central themes.

The Source of Strength

Believers are exhorted to be "strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might" (Ephesians 6:10). This power comes not from human effort but from Christ’s resurrection life, for He is seated "far above all principality, and power" (Ephesians 1:20-21). To "put on the whole armour of God" (Ephesians 6:11) is to participate in the attributes of Christ Himself, made available through union with Him.

The Armor as Christ Himself

The armor is described with imagery from Isaiah 59:17, where Yahweh wears righteousness and salvation. In Ephesians, these are the person and work of Christ.

  • The "loins girt with truth" anchors us in the doctrine of Christ.
  • The "breastplate of righteousness" is Christ as our righteousness, shielding us from accusation.
  • Our "feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace" provides the firm footing of reconciliation.
  • The "shield of faith" is our collective reliance on Christ, quenching doubts.
  • The "helmet of salvation" guards our minds with the hope of glorification.
  • The "sword of the Spirit" is the Word of God, dividing truth from error.

Fitted for the Corporate New Man

This armor is fitted for the "perfect man"—the corporate New Man who attains the "measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ" (Ephesians 4:13). Just as a helmet cannot be worn by a toe, the armor only functions when the Body stands together, compacted and growing (Ephesians 4:12-15). Individualistic attempts to "armor up" miss that the armor is a corporate expression. The victory is already won; our warfare is to stand in Christ’s triumph.

The Warfare of the Body

This standing is a resolute maintenance of Christ’s conquered territory. The warfare guards the gospel and builds up the saints. The ministry of gifted ones—apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds, and teachers—perfects the saints for this purpose (Ephesians 4:12). As we handle the "unsearchable riches of Christ" and build one another up, we create a testimony that separates truth from error. The sword of the Spirit ensures deception cannot take root.

When the Body is knit together, the armor becomes an impenetrable barrier. The shield of faith is the collective "Amen" of the church, quenching darts of condemnation. As one member is assaulted, the whole Body stands in agreement, resting in Christ.

Standing in the Victory

In this evil day, the greatest act of warfare is to remain standing in the simplicity of the gospel. We are not called to storm hell in our own strength, but to occupy Christ’s victory. The armor of God manifests a Body assured in understanding, preserving Christ’s testimony until His appearing.
