Visual Theology – Ephesians
The Visual Theology charts are designed to help you see the structure and movement of Scripture. They highlight patterns, contrasts, and developments that are often difficult to hold together when reading line by line.
These charts show the structure of the argument. The accompanying articles develop each part in full.
This approach follows a long tradition of visual teaching in the Church. The well-known charts of Clarence Larkin helped many grasp the broad outline of Scripture. In the same spirit, these charts aim to make visible what the Word of God is revealing.

From Death to Exaltation with Christ
Ephesians 2:1-7 -- From Death to Exaltation with Christ
This chart shows the structure. What follows explains each part.
Ephesians 2:1-7
And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) and hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: that in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.
Ephesians 2:1-7: The Unbroken Act of God’s Resurrection Power
Ephesians 2:1-7 unfolds the believer’s journey as an unbroken act of God’s resurrection power. Paul does not present a process for us to accomplish, but a single, divine work that moves us from death in sin to being seated with Christ in the heavenly places. This is the same power Paul described earlier—the “exceeding greatness of his power” that raised Christ from the dead and seated Him at God’s right hand (Ephesians 1:19-20). That same power now operates toward us, bringing us into the new creation.
The Starting Point: Utter Helplessness
We begin in utter helplessness: “dead in trespasses and sins” (Ephesians 2:1). This is not sickness but death—total separation from God, powerless, and under the sway of the world and “the prince of the power of the air” (Ephesians 2:2). Our condition was one of total inability.
The Divine Initiative: “But God…”
“But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)” (Ephesians 2:4-5). The initiative is entirely God’s. Out of His mercy and eternal love, He made us alive together with Christ—a full participation in Christ’s resurrection life. The parenthetical “by grace ye are saved” underscores that this entire operation is grace from start to finish.
The Full Scope: Raised and Seated with Christ
God’s action does not stop at making us alive. “And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 2:6). His power also raised us and seated us with Christ. This is a present reality in God’s eyes. We have been transferred from the authority of darkness into Christ’s kingdom (Colossians 1:13). Our position is with Christ, far above all rule and authority.
This seating is not the result of our efforts, but of God’s mighty power applied to us. We are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:10). Our security rests in what God has done, not in our performance. As Paul states, “your life is hid with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:3).
The Eternal Purpose: A Showcase of Grace
God’s purpose in this exaltation is to display His grace: “That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 2:7). We are made a showcase of His grace and kindness for all eternity. Our story displays God’s glory and generosity, not human achievement.
The Reality of Our Salvation
This is the reality of our salvation: we were dead, but God, by resurrection power, made us alive, raised us, and seated us with Christ. All is by grace, apart from our works, so that the riches of His grace might be displayed forever. Our position is secure, our future assured, by the very power that raised Christ from the dead. We are the masterpiece of God, beneficiaries and displays of His endless grace.
