Visual Theology – Ephesians
The Visual Theology charts are designed to help you see the structure and movement of Scripture. They highlight patterns, contrasts, and developments that are often difficult to hold together when reading line by line.
These charts show the structure of the argument. The accompanying articles develop each part in full.
This approach follows a long tradition of visual teaching in the Church. The well-known charts of Clarence Larkin helped many grasp the broad outline of Scripture. In the same spirit, these charts aim to make visible what the Word of God is revealing.

Institutional vs. Spiritual Unity
Ephesians 6:10-20 -- The Armor of God and Corporate Unity
This chart shows the structure. What follows explains each part.
Ephesians 6:10-20
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; and for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.
The Unity of the Body of Christ
The unity of the Body of Christ, revealed in Ephesians 6:10-20, is a spiritual and corporate reality anchored in Christ Himself. Paul’s description of the "Armor of God" unveils the Divine Warrior clothing His entire body with His own victory. This unity is not measured by physical gathering or institutional membership, but by being saturated with the truth of Christ’s finished work. Paul, though imprisoned, declared himself "together in spirit" with the Body (Colossians 2:5), showing that true unity transcends physical boundaries.
This reality is pictured in the "Fellowship on the Walls," recalling Nehemiah’s builders who were "separated upon the wall, one far from another" (Nehemiah 4:19). Though distant, they were unified by the trumpet’s sound. Today, the "trumpet" is the clear Gospel. When the truth of Christ’s finished work resonates, even through a screen or written word, it is a valid "joint of supply." The Spirit’s supply flows wherever the Gospel is received, joining warriors on the wall by the same Spirit.
The corporate warrior’s stability is rooted in peace—"feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace" (Ephesians 6:15). This peace is a positional truth and a weapon, the ground of reconciliation that renders the Body immovable. Standing in this peace means occupying territory Christ has already won, where the enemy has no claim. This grounding in Christ’s finished work prevents spiritual instability.
Unlike the pursuit of visible uniformity, spiritual unity is maintained by the flow of the Word and the Spirit’s operation. The "joints of supply" are the nourishment of the inner man by the living Word. Whether gathered or connected across distances, the Body strives together for the Gospel. Isolation is an illusion; standing in the truth is standing with the whole.
The "Sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God" (Ephesians 6:17), divides the two kinds of unity. This sword cuts through mixture, exposing the gray zones of legalism and religious confusion. By it, the Body is preserved from "winds of doctrine" and fitted for Christ’s stature.
Assurance is found not in visible institutions, but in being clothed in a victory that has already displaced the principalities. The Body’s unity is spiritual, incorruptible, and rooted in the eternal Head. To stand in it is to rest in God’s sovereign arrangement, knowing every member is joined to an innumerable company, shielded by the same truth.
