Visual Theology – Ephesians
The Visual Theology charts are designed to help you see the structure and movement of Scripture. They highlight patterns, contrasts, and developments that are often difficult to hold together when reading line by line.
These charts show the structure of the argument. The accompanying articles develop each part in full.
This approach follows a long tradition of visual teaching in the Church. The well-known charts of Clarence Larkin helped many grasp the broad outline of Scripture. In the same spirit, these charts aim to make visible what the Word of God is revealing.

Israel’s Covenant Bride vs. Church’s Organic Union
Ephesians 5:25-32 -- The Great Mystery of Union
This chart shows the structure. What follows explains each part.
Ephesians 5:25-32
Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; that he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, that he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh, but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: for we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.
The Believer's Position: Covenant Bride vs. Organic Union
To understand the believer’s position in Ephesians 5:25-32, we must distinguish between Israel’s covenant bride relationship and the Church’s organic union with Christ. Paul reveals a mystery not merely about marriage, but about the unique nature of our union with the Lord.
Israel: The Covenant Bride
Israel stood before God as a covenant bride. The Mosaic Law functioned as a marriage contract, a conditional relationship that proved breakable due to Israel’s unfaithfulness. God issued a bill of divorce, as seen in Hosea, yet promised future restoration: “I will say to them which were not my people, Thou art my people” (Hosea 2:23). The New Covenant is a marriage covenant offered to Israel for her national renewal. However, as a separate party to a contract, Israel’s relationship was vulnerable to breach, confirmed by her inability to keep the Law and her subsequent casting away. The Law was added “because of transgressions, till the seed should come” (Galatians 3:19).
The Church: An Organic Union
In contrast, the Church’s relationship is an organic union of substance. Paul uses the creation of Eve from Adam’s side to explain this: “bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh” (Genesis 2:23). As Adam was put to sleep and Eve was built from his side, so Christ died and the Church was brought forth in resurrection as His counterpart. This is a creative act producing a new creation. The Church has no history apart from Christ; we were hidden in Him, died in Him, and emerged as His very fullness.
The Inseparable Union
This organic union makes the Church inseparable from Christ. We are not strangers cleaving to Him, but members of His body, of His flesh, and of His bones (Ephesians 5:30). Our life is “hid with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:3). The Church is not a second party in a legal arrangement, but the product of Christ’s resurrection life. This union is unbreakable; He will not divorce His own body. His righteousness is our righteousness, and we have no existence apart from Him.
Sanctification by Christ
Christ’s sanctification of the Church is His own work: He “loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it... that it should be holy and without blemish” (Ephesians 5:25-27). The “spots” and “wrinkles” represent the defilement of legalistic teaching—the attempt to mix law and grace. Christ’s answer is the continual washing of the Word, revealing His finished work and our place in Him.
One Ultimate Purpose
While Israel and the Church are distinct, God’s purpose is ultimately one. The New Jerusalem will be the composite Bride. Yet, the Church’s present relationship is unique: a new creation, organically united to Christ, fulfilling the mystery hidden from ages. This is the “great mystery”—a marriage not of contract, but of substance, guaranteeing an unfailing union forever.
