Visual Theology – Ephesians

The Visual Theology charts are designed to help you see the structure and movement of Scripture. They highlight patterns, contrasts, and developments that are often difficult to hold together when reading line by line.

These charts show the structure of the argument. The accompanying articles develop each part in full.

This approach follows a long tradition of visual teaching in the Church. The well-known charts of Clarence Larkin helped many grasp the broad outline of Scripture. In the same spirit, these charts aim to make visible what the Word of God is revealing.

The Spirit: Seal and Pledge of Inheritance

Ephesians 1:13-14 -- The Spirit as Seal and Pledge

This chart shows the structure. What follows explains each part.

Ephesians 1:13-14
In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

Ephesians 1:13-14 reveals that the Holy Spirit is both the seal and the earnest—the pledge—of our inheritance in Christ.

The Seal: God’s Mark of Ownership

To be "sealed with that holy Spirit of promise" means God has marked us as His own purchased possession. The Spirit’s indwelling is God’s eternal declaration of ownership, confirming we belong to Him and are included in His purpose to head up all things in Christ.

The Earnest: The Pledge of Our Inheritance

The Spirit is also "the earnest of our inheritance," a down payment guaranteeing the full inheritance to come. Like a firstfruits sample of the harvest, the Spirit is a foretaste of the glory that will be fully manifested at Christ’s return (Romans 8:23). We have this pledge now while awaiting the full redemption of our bodies.

An Illustrative Type: Eliezer and Rebekah

This truth is illustrated in Abraham’s servant Eliezer (meaning "Comforter"), a type of the Holy Spirit (Genesis 24). He brought gifts to Rebekah, marking her as Isaac’s bride and giving her a foretaste of future riches. Similarly, the Holy Spirit, our Comforter, gives us gifts and assurance as a taste of the inheritance we will fully enjoy with Christ.

Our Present Experience: Assurance and Longing

Our present experience is one of assurance and longing. The Spirit testifies to our belonging and gives a taste of future liberty and joy, sustaining us amid difficulty. As 1 Peter 1:8 notes, we rejoice with "joy unspeakable" through the Spirit’s testimony about Christ and our inheritance in Him.

Unto the Praise of His Glory

Ultimately, the Spirit’s role as seal and pledge is "unto the praise of his glory." God’s purpose is to display His grace and glory through redeemed vessels. The Spirit’s presence guarantees we are part of God’s masterpiece, destined for display in the ages to come. This anchors us in the certainty that we are His and He is bringing us home.
