Visual Theology – Ephesians
The Visual Theology charts are designed to help you see the structure and movement of Scripture. They highlight patterns, contrasts, and developments that are often difficult to hold together when reading line by line.
These charts show the structure of the argument. The accompanying articles develop each part in full.
This approach follows a long tradition of visual teaching in the Church. The well-known charts of Clarence Larkin helped many grasp the broad outline of Scripture. In the same spirit, these charts aim to make visible what the Word of God is revealing.

Ephesians 4:11-16 -- From Immaturity to Fullness
This chart shows the structure. What follows explains each part.
Ephesians 4:11-16
And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ: that we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; but speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: from whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
The Movement from Immaturity to Maturity in the Body
The movement from spiritual immaturity to maturity in the Body of Christ is central to Ephesians 4:11-16. This passage reveals the church as a single, corporate entity—the masterpiece of God—designed to express Christ’s fullness. This progression is not achieved by human effort, but by the circulation of the unsearchable riches of Christ, distributed from the Head through the members by divinely given gifts.
Paul anchors this call in the vision of the church as Christ’s body and the display of God’s wisdom (Ephesians 4:1). The danger is reducing his instructions to introspective, law-based efforts, which breeds passivity. Instead, our walk must match our heavenly calling, rooted in the administration of the fullness of times, where God gathers all things in Christ (Ephesians 1:10).
The transition from immaturity is initiated by the gift of the resurrected Christ, who “gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers” (Ephesians 4:11). These are living vessels through whom the ascended Lord circulates His life. Their purpose is “for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ” (Ephesians 4:12). To “perfect” the saints is to equip them with the full, experiential knowledge of the Son of God, enabling every member to function as bold heirs rather than passive children.
The result is that saints are no longer “children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine” (Ephesians 4:14). As ministry gifts circulate Christ’s riches, saints are brought into “the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ” (Ephesians 4:13). This “perfect man” is the corporate New Man—a body where every member is joined to the Head. This unity is the organic oneness of the Triune God enlarged to include the church, structurally expressed through the “seven ones” (Ephesians 4:4-6).
As the saints are equipped and supply flows through every joint, “the whole body fitly joined together… maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love” (Ephesians 4:16). Each member becomes a conduit for Christ’s riches, moving the body from passivity to bold, unified participation.
The goal is the emergence of a mature, corporate New Man expressing Christ’s fullness. As we speak the truth in love, the body builds itself up toward the day when Christ is all in all. This is the masterpiece of divine engineering—God heading up all things in Christ by the resurrection power that works Christ into a people who are His fullness.
