Visual Theology – Ephesians

The Visual Theology charts are designed to help you see the structure and movement of Scripture. They highlight patterns, contrasts, and developments that are often difficult to hold together when reading line by line.

These charts show the structure of the argument. The accompanying articles develop each part in full.

This approach follows a long tradition of visual teaching in the Church. The well-known charts of Clarence Larkin helped many grasp the broad outline of Scripture. In the same spirit, these charts aim to make visible what the Word of God is revealing.

Ministry: Labor or Life Supply?

Ephesians 4:11-16 -- Ministry: Work or Supply?

This chart shows the structure. What follows explains each part.

Ephesians 4:11-16
And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ: that we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; but speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: from whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

Paul’s Vision of Ministry: Supply, Not Demand

Paul’s vision of ministry in Ephesians 4:11–16 contrasts sharply with viewing Christian service as burdensome labor. He presents it not as a duty, but as a supply of life flowing from our position as sons. Christ gave gifted individuals “for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ” (Ephesians 4:11–12). The “work of the ministry” is thus the circulation of Christ’s life to build up the Body.

The Two Paradigms: Bondservant vs. Heir

The difference is one of motive and result. The legalistic “work concept” treats ministry as wage-earning labor, where the believer toils like a servant for approval. This is the spirit of the bondwoman (Galatians 4:31), driven by fear and obligation, producing exhaustion and dead works.

In contrast, the Pauline view is rooted in sonship and inheritance. Ministry is the outflow of being in Christ, a steward of His grace. The church is “his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all” (Ephesians 1:23). The heir serves from delight in a possessed inheritance, motivated by a “rich supply,” not fear.

The Language of Nourishment

Paul’s language for ministry is that of nourishment, not toil. “For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church” (Ephesians 5:29). Christ’s service is feeding and caring, bringing saints to maturity by supplying His resurrection life. This is the “meat” of the New Testament: a ministry of supply, not demand.

First a Partaker, Then a Minister

True ministry begins with being a partaker. “The husbandman that laboureth must be first partaker of the fruits” (2 Timothy 2:6). One cannot nourish others without first being nourished by Christ. Ministry is sharing the “meat” digested in fellowship with the Lord, as seen in Jesus, who said, “My meat is to do the will of him that sent me” (John 4:34).

The Result: Organic Growth in Love

As this supply circulates, the result is organic growth: the body is “fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth... unto the edifying of itself in love” (Ephesians 4:16). Ministry is the mutual nourishing of the Body by Christ through His members—the outflow of life and the enjoyment of our inheritance. Any “work” that does not nourish is a dead work; true service is the supply of Christ Himself, building up the church in love.
