Visual Theology – Ephesians
The Visual Theology charts are designed to help you see the structure and movement of Scripture. They highlight patterns, contrasts, and developments that are often difficult to hold together when reading line by line.
These charts show the structure of the argument. The accompanying articles develop each part in full.
This approach follows a long tradition of visual teaching in the Church. The well-known charts of Clarence Larkin helped many grasp the broad outline of Scripture. In the same spirit, these charts aim to make visible what the Word of God is revealing.

Ephesians 1:3-14
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: according as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace, wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence; having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself: that in the dispensation of the fullness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him: in whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will: that we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
The Foundation: Our Identity in Christ
The Christian life is built upon our identity in Christ, revealed in Ephesians 1:3-14. God has "chosen us in him before the foundation of the world" (Ephesians 1:4) and "predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself" (Ephesians 1:5). We are "accepted in the beloved" (Ephesians 1:6), and in Him, "we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins" (Ephesians 1:7). These are positional truths that define who we are from God's perspective, regardless of our experience.
Our Heavenly Citizenship
This identity establishes our heavenly citizenship. We have been "delivered from the power of darkness, and... translated... into the kingdom of his dear Son" (Colossians 1:13). Our true home is above; we are seated with Christ in the heavenly places (Ephesians 2:6), and every spiritual blessing is ours in Him (Ephesians 1:3).
Our Earthly Assignment: Ambassadors for Christ
While our citizenship is in heaven, our assignment is on earth. We are ambassadors for Christ (2 Corinthians 5:20), sent to represent Him in a foreign land. An ambassador’s identity, resources, and authority come from his homeland, not his present circumstances. Likewise, our worth, power, and purpose must come from our position in Christ, not from worldly conditions.
This ambassadorship is a privilege and mission. We are here temporarily as representatives of God’s kingdom, entrusted with the ministry of reconciliation. We are to shine Christ’s light and speak hope to those without it. Our confidence to serve springs from knowing we are "accepted in the beloved." Our failures or difficulties do not define us; we must remember who we are in Christ. This is the secret to maintaining joy and peace in a chaotic world.
Our Secure Destiny
The believer’s destiny is glorification with Christ. Ephesians 1:11-12 states, "In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will." Our future is secure and our inheritance guaranteed by Christ’s work. We are "sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, which is the earnest of our inheritance" (Ephesians 1:13-14).
The Power of Positional Truth
Knowing our position, mission, and destiny is the source of power, joy, and peace. Forgetting our heavenly citizenship leads to "spiritual amnesia" and loss of comfort. Embracing positional truth strengthens us to endure, serve, and rejoice, knowing God works all things for our good (Romans 8:28). Every situation can draw us nearer to Christ and make us more effective ambassadors.
Ultimately, our heavenly ambassadorship is rooted in God’s eternal purpose: "That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ" (Ephesians 1:10). Our lives, mission, and future are found in Him. This vision lifts us above our circumstances and fills us with hope, enabling us to represent heaven on earth until we are glorified with Christ.
