Visual Theology – Ephesians

The Visual Theology charts are designed to help you see the structure and movement of Scripture. They highlight patterns, contrasts, and developments that are often difficult to hold together when reading line by line.

These charts show the structure of the argument. The accompanying articles develop each part in full.

This approach follows a long tradition of visual teaching in the Church. The well-known charts of Clarence Larkin helped many grasp the broad outline of Scripture. In the same spirit, these charts aim to make visible what the Word of God is revealing.

Building and Defending: The Body's Dual Role

Ephesians 4:23-32 -- Building and Defending Together

This chart shows the structure. What follows explains each part.

Ephesians 4:23-32
And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Neither give place to the devil. Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth. Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

The Dual Calling: Building and Defending the Body of Christ

The Body of Christ has a dual calling: to build itself up and to guard against spiritual attack. Ephesians 4:23-32 shows that building up the Body is inseparable from guarding it. This work is founded on the renewal in the spirit of our mind (Ephesians 4:23-24), which creates the new man—a corporate reality where Christ is expressed in His unified Body (Romans 12:5).

Building Up the Body

Building occurs as we nourish one another with the Word and walk in Gospel virtues: lowliness, meekness, longsuffering, and forgiveness. This edifies and maintains unity. Our acceptance of others is rooted in Christ’s acceptance of us: “forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you” (Ephesians 4:32).

The Need to Defend

Building requires defense. The enemy sows division and error. Paul warns, “Neither give place to the devil” (Ephesians 4:27). Unresolved strife and corrupt communication invite his activity. While he cannot take our salvation, he seeks to “grieve the Spirit” (Ephesians 4:30) by turning minds toward offense and suspicion. An unrenewed mind becomes vulnerable to demonic influence, threatening fellowship with error.

Building and Defending Are Simultaneous

Nehemiah’s workers built the wall with a tool in one hand and a sword in the other (Nehemiah 4:17). The wall represents the finished work of Christ, the Gospel boundary that protects God’s people. The sword is the Word of God, wielded against the enemy’s lies. These tasks are concurrent: as we nourish one another, we must also be vigilant to resist error that undermines unity.

Corporate Spiritual Warfare

True spiritual warfare is corporate. The enemy aims to halt the equipping of the saints by introducing division and error. We are called to stand fast together, “striving together for the faith of the gospel” (Philippians 1:27), refusing to let bitterness or evil speaking take root (Ephesians 4:26, 31).

Genuine ministry flows from renewal, turning God’s comfort into comfort for others. We must avoid religious games and hidden judgments, instead judging fruit, walking in forgiveness, and keeping the Word flowing. Thus we build and defend together, standing on Christ’s finished work with the sword of truth ready.
