Visual Theology – Galatians

The Visual Theology charts are designed to help you see the structure and movement of Scripture. They highlight patterns, contrasts, and developments that are often difficult to hold together when reading line by line.

These charts show the structure of the argument. The accompanying articles develop each part in full.

This approach follows a long tradition of visual teaching in the Church. The well-known charts of Clarence Larkin helped many grasp the broad outline of Scripture. In the same spirit, these charts aim to make visible what the Word of God is revealing.

Earthly Shadows vs. The Ascended Mystery

Galatians 1 -- Earthly Shadows vs. The Ascended Mystery

This chart shows the structure. What follows explains each part.

Having established that Paul's gospel came through direct divine revelation rather than human tradition, we now see the full scope of that distinction. This article expands the contrast from institutional authority to cosmic categories: Paul isn't merely defending a different source for his message, but revealing that his message belongs to an entirely different order of reality—the ascended mystery versus earthly shadows.

There is a distinction in Galatians that often goes unnoticed because it requires stepping back far enough to see the full canvas: Paul is not arguing for a reformed version of the earthly program that Jesus conducted in Israel -- he is arguing for something that belongs to a different order entirely. The earthly kingdom program, with its focus on the circumcision, its center in Jerusalem, its blueprint in the Mosaic tent, was real and God-given. But it was shadow, not substance. What Paul received by revelation from the ascended and glorified Christ was not the refinement of that program but the unveiling of what it had been pointing toward -- a mystery kept hidden, now made manifest.

Galatians 1
Paul, an apostle, (not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ, and God the Father, who raised him from the dead;) and all the brethren which are with me, unto the churches of Galatia: Grace be to you and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father; to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen. I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ. But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ. For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews' religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the church of God, and wasted it. And profited in the Jews' religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers. But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother's womb, and called me by his grace, to reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood: neither went I up to Jerusalem to them which were apostles before me; but I went into Arabia, and returned again unto Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and abode with him fifteen days. But other of the apostles saw I none, save James the Lord's brother. Now the things which I write unto you, behold, before God, I lie not. Afterward, I came into the regions of Syria and Cilicia; and was unknown by face unto the churches of Judaea which were in Christ: but they had heard only, That he which persecuted us in times past now preacheth the faith which once he destroyed. And they glorified God in me.

The Decisive Distinction in Galatians

In Galatians, Paul draws a decisive distinction between the earthly kingdom focus and the heavenly mystery revelation entrusted to him.

The Earthly Kingdom Focus

The earthly kingdom focus is characterized by the ministry of the Lord Jesus in His earthly walk, where He is seen ministering to the circumcision, that is, to Israel, and centering His teaching in Jerusalem. This sphere is bound up with the traditions of the fathers, and its weight is felt as a heavy scroll tied to the stone tablets of Moses. The ultimate shadow of this system is Moses at Mount Sinai, where he received the physical blueprints for the earthly tent of meeting, with its bronze altar and the smoke of sacrifices. All these things were but shadows, physical ordinances and patterns that pointed forward but did not yet unveil the substance.

The Heavenly Mystery Revelation

Paul, however, insists that his gospel is not after man, nor did he receive it from man, but by direct revelation from Jesus Christ (Galatians 1:11-12). His apostleship and message are not a continuation of the earthly program, but a new disclosure from the ascended, glorified Christ. Paul describes himself as one separated from his mother’s womb and called by God’s grace to reveal His Son in him, that he might preach Him among the heathen (Galatians 1:15-16). This marks a break from the national and earthly boundaries of Israel, for the mystery now revealed includes the Gentiles as fellow heirs.

The heavenly mystery revelation is not tied to the old physical blueprints, nor does it rest on the traditions of the fathers. Instead, it is a spiritual blueprint, a present truth revealed from the Third Heavens by the glorified Christ. Paul is portrayed as a chosen vessel, refined and filled with light, to carry this mystery. The dividing line is clear: the physical shadows of the earthly tent give way to the spiritual reality of the Body of Christ. No longer is the habitation of God found in stone and smoke, but in living, interlocking stones—believers joined together as the true habitation of God.

From Shadow to Substance

This transition from shadow to substance is the heart of Paul’s revelation. The mystery that was kept secret is now made manifest, breaking the boundary that once confined God’s dealings to Israel alone. The inclusion of the Gentiles, symbolized by the opened sheet descending from heaven, signals that the present truth is not a mere extension of the old order, but a new creation in Christ. The Body of Christ, composed of all who are in Him, becomes the spiritual dwelling place of God, superseding the earthly tent and its ordinances.

Contending for the Heavenly Mystery

Thus, in Galatians, Paul contends for the heavenly mystery against any return to the earthly kingdom focus. The traditions, ordinances, and shadows of the former system have served their purpose and now yield to the direct revelation from the ascended Christ. The believer’s standing is no longer determined by physical descent or adherence to the law, but by participation in the Body of Christ, the true habitation of God, revealed in this present age through Paul’s unique apostleship.

The move from shadow to substance -- from the earthly tent with its bronze altar and smoke of sacrifice to the living Body of Christ composed of all believers -- is the cosmic frame inside which all of Galatians operates. Paul is not defending a theological preference; he is defending the actual content of the age that began when Christ ascended beyond all heavens. And the crowning disclosure of that mystery -- the thing that most astonished Paul, the thing he could never have reached by exegeting the old covenant traditions -- is the subject of the next stop: Christ in you. Not Christ before you. Not Christ above you. In you.

Recognizing that Paul's gospel unveils a heavenly mystery distinct from earthly shadows prepares us for the stunning content of that revelation. Next, we'll examine the precise phrase that captures this mystery's essence: God's purpose to reveal His Son not merely to Paul, but in him—the indwelling reality that transforms everything.
