Visual Theology – Galatians

The Visual Theology charts are designed to help you see the structure and movement of Scripture. They highlight patterns, contrasts, and developments that are often difficult to hold together when reading line by line.

These charts show the structure of the argument. The accompanying articles develop each part in full.

This approach follows a long tradition of visual teaching in the Church. The well-known charts of Clarence Larkin helped many grasp the broad outline of Scripture. In the same spirit, these charts aim to make visible what the Word of God is revealing.

Divine Origin and Corporate Solidarity

Galatians 1:1-2 -- Divine Origin and Corporate Solidarity

This chart shows the structure. What follows explains each part.

Having established that the authority of the true gospel is validated by the historical fact of Christ's resurrection, we now turn to see how Paul personally embodies this principle. In this article, we examine the opening salutation of Galatians, where Paul immediately grounds his own apostolic standing in that same divine origin, while simultaneously anchoring it within the living fellowship of believers.

Paul's opening two words -- 'Paul, apostle' -- carry more freight than they might appear to. The designation 'not of men, neither by man' was not a theological formality; it was a direct challenge to the assumption that legitimate ministry must be traceable through an earthly chain of command. The Judaizers operated within exactly that assumption, and they were leveraging it against Paul's churches: if your teacher has no credentials from Jerusalem, why should you trust his message? Paul's answer begins in his very salutation, and it moves in two simultaneous directions -- straight up toward the authority of the risen Christ, and outward toward the fellowship of the brethren.

Galatians 1:1-2
Paul, an apostle, (not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ, and God the Father, who raised him from the dead;) and all the brethren which are with me, unto the churches of Galatia:

The Apostolic Standing: Divine Origin and Corporate Solidarity

Paul’s opening words in Galatians 1 establish a profound balance in his apostolic standing, holding together both the divine origin of his commission and his solidarity with the fellowship of believers. He asserts that his apostleship is “not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ, and God the Father, who raised him from the dead” (Galatians 1:1). This declaration marks an unyielding vertical pillar descending from an open heaven, signifying that the gospel Paul proclaims is received directly from above, independent of human mediation or earthly validation.

The Solitary Authority of Revelation

This vertical reception is further clarified in Galatians 1:11-12, where Paul insists, “the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.” The message stands in solitary authority, untouched by the shifting opinions or credentials of men. It does not require the endorsement of any earthly institution, for its source is divine and its authority absolute.

The Foundation of Fellowship

Yet, this divine independence does not leave the believer standing alone in a spiritual vacuum. Paul is careful to include “all the brethren which are with me” (Galatians 1:2) as he addresses the churches of Galatia. The solitary pillar of revelation finds its base surrounded by a flourishing, fruit-bearing vine and a circle of interlocking foundational stones. This imagery conveys that while the message is unassailable in its heavenly origin, those who stand upon it are rooted in a living fellowship, a corporate solidarity that bears fruit and provides stability.

Thus, Paul’s position is neither isolated nor self-sufficient in a human sense. The apostolic message, though descending from heaven, is anchored in the fellowship of truth shared among the brethren. The gospel’s authority flows from God, but its outworking is realized in the context of a community that stands together on the same foundation.

A Single Flow of Truth

This dual nature—divine origin and corporate solidarity—guards against the error of seeking human approval while also resisting the temptation of spiritual isolation. The believer, like Paul, stands upon a message that is unshakable because it is from God, yet flourishes only within the circle of shared faith and mutual support. In Galatians 1, the apostolic standing is thus a single flow: from the open heaven above to the interwoven fellowship below, upholding the truth in both its solitary authority and its communal expression.

What this article establishes is that divine origin and corporate solidarity are not in tension -- the vertical reception of the gospel does not produce isolated spiritual lone-rangers any more than the communal expression of it can substitute for direct encounter with the risen Christ. Both are required; neither can swallow the other. Paul lives this balance throughout the letter. But having established who he is and with whom he stands, he now needs to name what he is standing against -- specifically, what the world his readers are being tempted to return to actually looks like. That is the territory of the next article: the present evil age.

With the apostolic foundation firmly laid—a message from God, received in community—Paul's greeting turns immediately to its purpose. The divine origin of the gospel is not an abstract truth; it is the very power that accomplishes a decisive rescue. This leads us directly to the next article, where we will explore the nature of the 'present evil age' from which Christ delivers us.
