Visual Theology – Galatians

The Visual Theology charts are designed to help you see the structure and movement of Scripture. They highlight patterns, contrasts, and developments that are often difficult to hold together when reading line by line.

These charts show the structure of the argument. The accompanying articles develop each part in full.

This approach follows a long tradition of visual teaching in the Church. The well-known charts of Clarence Larkin helped many grasp the broad outline of Scripture. In the same spirit, these charts aim to make visible what the Word of God is revealing.

Authority and Resurrection

Galatians 1 Corinthians 15:1-4, 14 -- Authority and Resurrection

This chart shows the structure. What follows explains each part.

Having established that the true gospel comes by divine revelation rather than human approval, we now confront the critical question: what validates that revelation? This chart, 'Authority and Resurrection,' moves from the source of Paul's message to its ultimate proof. Here we see that the authority of the gospel is not grounded in human credentials or tradition, but in the historical, life-giving reality of Christ's resurrection—the empty tomb that separates divine truth from human imitation.

A gospel that arrived by divine revelation rather than human tradition needs to explain what makes its authority legitimate -- and Paul's answer is not an argument but a historical fact: Christ rose from the dead. The problem Paul is addressing is not merely theoretical. There were other men claiming authority, other voices insisting on their credentials, other traditions being passed down through chains of religious succession. The question underneath the noise was simple and sharp: what separates the genuine from the counterfeit? Not the reputation of the messenger. Not the length of the tradition. Something else entirely.

Galatians 1 Corinthians 15:1-4, 14
Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; by which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures; and that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: and that he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.

The Authority of the Gospel vs. Man’s Authority

The authority of the Gospel stands in stark opposition to the authority derived from man. Galatians opens with a sharp distinction: “But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ” (Galatians 1:11-12, KJV). Here, Paul declares that the origin of the true Gospel is not human wisdom or credentials, but the direct revelation of the resurrected Christ. This divine source is the foundation of the Gospel’s authority.

The System of Man’s Authority

In contrast, the system of man’s authority is rooted in the approval, reputation, and self-appointment of rebellious men. Its origin is merely human, symbolized by dry, dead wooden staffs resting on the ground. These staffs have no life in them, just as human credentials and wisdom are spiritually barren. Such a system relies on outward reputation rather than divine validation, and its message offers no supernatural life. The end of this human rebellion is swift judgment, a darkness that swallows up those who trust in their own authority, echoing the fate of Korah’s rebellion in Numbers, where the earth opened to consume those who opposed God’s appointed mediator.

The Authority of Resurrection

The true Gospel, by contrast, is marked by the authority of resurrection. Its origin is God the Father and the risen Christ. The divine validation of the message is life springing from death, typified by Aaron’s rod, which, though a dead piece of wood, miraculously budded with fresh almonds. This budding rod was not left exposed, but was placed safely within the golden Ark of the Covenant as an eternal testimony of God’s choice and approval.

So also, the core truth of the Gospel is the empty tomb—the resurrection of Christ from the dead. The Gospel is not a message of mere improvement or human effort, but of supernatural life imparted through the risen Savior.

The Present Reality of Resurrection Life

This resurrection authority is not only a historical fact but produces a present reality in those who believe. “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me” (Galatians 2:20, KJV). The result of the true Gospel is the regeneration of believers, the very life of Christ now dwelling within them. This stands in opposition to the barrenness of human religion, which cannot impart life. The authority of the Gospel is thus secured by the resurrection, and its testimony is eternal, guarded by the power of God, just as the budding rod was kept within the Ark.

Summary Contrast

In summary, the contrast between man’s authority and the authority of the true Gospel is a matter of origin, validation, and result. Human authority begins and ends in death and judgment, while the authority of the Gospel is established by God, vindicated by resurrection, and results in the eternal life of Christ within believers. The empty tomb is the core truth and enduring testimony that the Gospel is not after man, but after the power of the living God.

Authority validated by resurrection rather than by human succession is a foundational claim, and it explains why Paul could stand before the pillars of Jerusalem and say they added nothing to him -- not as arrogance, but as precision. The message he carried was sealed at an empty tomb, not in an institutional council. But if Paul's authority is established, the next question is about its origin -- specifically, how a man who was trained in Judaism from the ground up could carry a message so entirely discontinuous with that training. The next article turns to Paul's own biography as the proof that what happened to him could only have been God.

With the authority of the gospel firmly anchored in the resurrection, a natural tension emerges: how does this solitary, divine commission relate to the community of believers? The next chart, 'Divine Origin and Corporate Solidarity,' will explore how Paul's unmediated authority from heaven simultaneously finds its expression and confirmation within the horizontal fellowship of the brethren—showing that divine revelation and corporate life are not opposites, but essential counterparts.
